Matching Information:

  • - FIrst Read the INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. Understand what needs to be jotted down on the answer sheet.
  • - Locate the KEY WORD (CONTENT WORD)
  • - Locate the part of the text that holds the synonym of the KEYWORD.
  • - It is extremely essential to focus on the synonyms.
  • - Match the information given in the question against the passage with the help of the KEYWORDS.

Multiple Choice:

You will be given a question and 3 or 4 answer choices. You are expected to choose the most appropriate answer based on the text.

Strategies:

  • - Read the Question
  • - Locate the KEY WORD (CONTENT WORD)
  • - Locate the part of the text that holds the synonym of the KEY WORD.
  • - Do not look at the options yet.
  • - Try to answer the question yourself FIRST.
  • - Then you match your answer with one of the options given.
  • - If in case you are not very sure about the answers, use the ELIMINATION Method.

Sentence Completion:

This is a gap-filling task and this gap may be in the middle or at the end of a sentence.

Strategies:

  • - FIrst Read the INSTRUCTIONS as it tells you how many words/ numbers the answer should hold.
  • - You will ALWAYS pick the answer only from the given text and never alter it in anyways to suit the blank grammatically.
  • - Locate the KEY WORD (CONTENT WORD)
  • - Locate the part of the text that holds the synonym of the KEY WORD.
  • - Try to predict the possible kind of word/s (Noun, adjective, adverb etc.) that would make the sentence grammatically sound right based on the words preceding the given blank.

Short Answer Questions:

Strategies:

  • - You will ALWAYS pick the answer only from the given text and never alter it in anyways.
  • - Locate the KEY WORD (CONTENT WORD)
  • - Locate the part of the text that holds the synonym of the KEY WORD.

True/ False Not Given:

Strategies:

True, False, Not Given question expects you to recognize whether data in a content is valid or not.

WARNING! This is the challenging aspect of the Reading Module

Probable Challenges:

  • - Not understanding the clear definition of True/ False/ Not Given options.
  • - Matching the keyword from the question to the words in the passage without understanding the meaning of the question statement.
  • - Investing a considerable amount of time on "Not Given" option.

Strategies:

  • - If the question statement and the passage statement mean the same then go ahead and mark it as TRUE.
  • - If the question statement and the passage statement contradicts each other then go ahead and mark in as FALSE.
  • - If the information in the question statement is not explicitly found in the passage then mark it as NOT GIVEN. In a Not Given option, there will always be a certain level of ambiguity/uncertainty and that is when the student is expected not to spend any extra time validating the option

Matching Heading:

Matching Heading question expects you to understand the meaning of a passage or paragraph and choose the best title out of the given list.
Usually the number of titles given would be greater than the number of paragraphs.

WARNING! This is Question type usually occurs along with lengthier passages esp in Section 3.

Probable Challenges:

  • - Investing a considerable amount of time reading each paragraph (word by word) and not being able to conclude on the main idea.

Strategies:

  • - Do not read the entire passage/ paragraph
  • - The first 1 or 2 sentences and the last couple of sentences of the paragraph usually gives you the main idea of the paragraph. Match this against the keywords of the Title List and select the appropriate answer.
